HOA Power Limiting Bill Passed By Senate
Senate Bill 378, which recently passed the North Carolina Senate unanimously (47–0), aims to limit the power of homeowners associations (HOAs) across the state. The bill would cap HOA fines, prohibit foreclosures over unpaid fines, and prevent HOAs from penalizing residents for operating home-based businesses like tutoring or music lessons.
Advocates like Charles Williams of NC Citizens for HOA Reform see it as a positive step, citing North Carolina’s lack of HOA oversight and historically weak laws. Similar legislation has failed in the past, often due to strong lobbying from HOA interests.
Representative Frank Iler, who has sponsored related bills, plans to propose amendments to SB 378 using elements from his own bill, HB 444, which missed a key deadline.
Supporters emphasize the bill targets abusive practices and shouldn’t concern well-managed HOAs. SB 378 has passed its first House reading and now awaits further action in committee. Read more at wwaytv3.com.
Navassa has been without a police department for over a week after its last full-time officer resigned. While the town planned for Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies to patrol in the interim, the Sheriff’s Office reports that no formal request has been made and sees no current need to add resources. District Attorney Jon David emphasized the need for the town to either fully fund a police department or formally partner with the Sheriff’s Office to ensure consistent law enforcement. The future of Navassa’s police department will be discussed by the town council on Thursday, May 15. Read more at wwaytv3.com.
