Burn Ban Still in Effect for Brunswick County

The burn ban that was put in place on Saturday is still in effect. The ban prohibits all burning within 100 feet of an occupied structure.

YONDR Pouch Program Expanded in Brunswick County Schools

The Brunswick County Schools Board of Education has voted to expand the YONDR Pouch Program, which requires students to store their phones in locked pouches during the school day. The program will be implemented at four middle schools and two academies, excluding high school visitors to CTE. Students can access their phones at designated unlocking stations. Following a successful pilot at two middle schools, the program showed improvements in engagement, attendance, and discipline. The expansion will cost just over $78,000. Read more at WECT.com.

No Police Department in Navassa, Again.

Navassa is once again without a fully staffed police department after its last three full-time officers resigned, following the recent departure of Chief Dale Thomas. Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies will handle patrols while town leaders consider the future of the department, including possibly dissolving it entirely. Town administrator Landin Holland emphasized the need to evaluate all options in light of growth and budget constraints. Councilwoman Ida Dixon criticized the town’s lack of support for officers, warning young law enforcement professionals against starting their careers in Navassa due to low pay and limited authority.

Wilmington Bombers Australian Rules Football Practice Tonight

Australian rules football, also known as Aussie Rules, is a unique contact sport originating in Australia. It involves two teams of 18 players competing on an oval field, attempting to outscore each other by kicking an oval ball between the goalposts. Players can advance the ball by kicking, hand-balling, and dribbling.

The team may be named the “Wilmington” Bombers but the team captain and founder, Nic Parker, lives in Leland. (And yes, he’s an Aussie).

The practice is at 6pm tonight at Robert Strange Park (401 S 8th Street) in Wilmington and generally lasts an hour. It is open to men and women - generally 16 and up.
