THE NEWS
Rip Tides, Everywhere. Stay Out of the Water
Although Hurricane Erin is not expected to make landfall along the U.S. East Coast, its large size is already creating dangerous conditions in Southeastern North Carolina. On Monday, lifeguards rescued more than 70 swimmers at Wrightsville Beach and 15 at Surf City due to powerful rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk through Friday, and several towns, including Wrightsville Beach and Ocean Isle Beach, have posted no swimming advisories. Officials are also preparing for potential flooding, with Carolina Beach closing parts of Canal Drive and moving equipment to higher ground. Authorities urge beachgoers to stay out of the ocean, warning that the rip currents are too strong for even the best swimmers. (WECT)
Erin Update

Tropical Storm Wind Forecast for Hurricane Erin
Hurricane Erin (Category 3) is located east of the Bahamas with maximum sustained winds near 115 mph. The storm is moving northwest at 7 mph but will turn northward Wednesday and northeast Thursday, staying offshore between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda.
Tropical Storm Warnings: Turks and Caicos, Southeast Bahamas
Tropical Storm Watches: Central Bahamas, Beaufort Inlet to Duck, NC (including Pamlico Sound)
Storm Surge Watch: Cape Lookout to Duck, NC (2–4 ft possible)
Erin is a large hurricane, with tropical-storm-force winds extending 205 miles from its center. Heavy rain of up to 8 inches is possible in the Bahamas and up to 4 inches in North Carolina’s Outer Banks later this week. Life-threatening surf, rip currents, and minor coastal flooding are expected along the Bahamas, Bermuda, U.S. East Coast, and Atlantic Canada in the coming days.
Bonus Systems in the Atlantic

Two Additional Disturbances in Atlantic
While it looks like major threat was dodged with Hurricane Erin, there are two additional systems in the Atlantic. One storm shows chances of development over the next 7 days.
Name Some Turtle Hatchlings!
The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is welcoming two new loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings—one from Carolina Beach and one from Fort Fisher—that will serve as ambassadors for ocean conservation. Each year, the Aquarium cares for two stragglers that don’t make it to the ocean, raising them until they are yearlings.
The community is invited to help name the hatchlings from nine paired options, including cultural, nature-inspired, and celestial themes such as Waccamaw & Coharie, Harbor & Isla, Beacon & Buoy, and Nova & Astral. Voting is open in-person at the Aquarium or online through its social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn) until Friday, Aug. 22 at noon. (NC Aquariums)
