THE NEWS

37th Season Wrap-Up: Holden Beach Turtle Watch Reports Turtle Numbers

The Holden Beach Turtle Watch wrapped up its 37th season, reporting 35 nests, 2,389 hatchlings, and 4,012 known eggs in 2025. The first nest was laid on May 22 and the last on July 26. Numbers were lower than last year due to storms, with Hurricane Erin’s high tides and waves causing significant nest overwash and sand inundation along the beach. (WECT)

Community Rallies in Brunswick County as Businesses and Artists Step Up

Brunswick County businesses and artists are rallying to support families impacted by Saturday’s deadly shooting. Island Grindz will host a fundraiser Friday at Koko Cabana, with proceeds going directly to victims’ families. Local artists are also contributing, including the Southport Gooney Bird Artist, who will offer hundreds of paintings by donation on October 18, and children’s book artist Hope Spencer, who is encouraging broad community support. Proceeds from the art fundraiser will benefit Southport Cares, a nonprofit created by first responders. Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew says these efforts highlight the community’s strength and generosity. Additionally, t-shirts are being sold online to raise funds for the first confirmed victim’s family. (WWAY)
