Brunswick County Commissioners Reject Funding Proposal for Fire Staffing

On June 17, 2025, the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners voted to dismiss a proposed $6.8 million subsidy intended to help fire departments across the county address ongoing staffing shortages. The proposal, brought forward by Commissioner Randy Thompson, aimed to provide financial support to improve personnel levels for fire and emergency services. Despite recognizing the need for additional staffing, the board chose not to allocate the funds at this time. As a result, local fire departments will continue to face challenges in maintaining adequate staffing without county financial assistance. The board did not indicate whether a revised proposal might be considered in the future. (Port City Daily)

Oak Island Officials Urge Public to Support Safe Sea Turtle Nesting Practices

As sea turtle nesting season returns to Oak Island with summer, officials are urging the public to follow safe nesting practices after three recent disturbances to nests. Suzan Bell, a long-time volunteer with the Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program, emphasized the importance of community involvement in protecting the endangered species. Guidelines include staying at least 20 feet away from turtles, not shining lights, and always walking behind them. Harassing or disrupting turtles or their nests is a federal offense, and any such incidents should be reported to authorities. The program also supports state research by tracking nesting turtles. Residents and visitors are encouraged to call the protection program if they see a turtle coming ashore. (WECT)
