THE NEWS
Blood Drive in Brunswick Forest Tomorrow
The American Red Cross has two appointments remaining for “Power Red” Donation tomorrow at the Brunswick Forest Community Center.
A Power Red donation through the American Red Cross is a type of blood donation where you give two units of red blood cells in one visit using a special machine that returns your plasma and platelets to you. It takes slightly longer than a regular donation (about 1.5 hours) but may leave you feeling better afterward due to fluid return. This type of donation is especially valuable for trauma patients, surgeries, and those with chronic conditions like sickle cell disease. It’s ideal for people with blood types O+, O−, A−, or B− and requires meeting specific height, weight, and hemoglobin criteria. Power Red donors can give every 112 days and help double their impact with each visit.
Teen Ran Over by Truck on Oak Island Beach
Oak Island officials have confirmed that a 15-year-old girl was accidentally run over by a truck on the beach on July 14. The truck, operated by employees of TI Coastal Services, Inc., was surveying the shoreline for a town beach renourishment project and had special permission to drive on the beach, despite general prohibitions under Town Ordinance 28-5. The teen was lying near the water when her legs were run over. Witnesses said the employees stayed with her until emergency responders arrived. She was evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials described the incident as rare, and no criminal charges have been filed as of Wednesday. TI Coastal Services has not commented. (WECT)
One Development Approved, Another Shot Down
The Brunswick County Planning Board has approved the Folly Hills development by a 4-1 vote. The project will include over 200 single-family homes on 146 acres along Highway 211, across from Riversea Plantation, and will connect to the Rolling Hills development. Board Chair Clifton Cheek noted that Highway 211 has long been a focus for development and expects more proposals in the area. Meanwhile, the board denied the Sailors Haven project near Sunset Beach due to inadequate access points. (WWAY)
