THE NEWS

Some of our Beaches are the Best In North Carolina!

Several Cape Fear beaches were recognized in USA TODAY’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel awards. Readers voted over four weeks to select their favorite beaches.

Brunswick County beaches included:

  • Holden Beach – 3rd place

  • Oak Island – 5th place

  • Ocean Isle Beach – 10th place

Local tourism officials expressed excitement over the national recognition as summer begins.

What Is Threatening Our Fly Traps?

WECT recently interviewed Park Ranger Jessee Anderson about Venus flytraps. Venus flytraps, though small, are a unique and iconic plant found only within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina. Known for their insect-trapping ability, they are a major draw at Carolina Beach State Park, especially during their bloom from May to June.

Anderson emphasizes their ecological importance and warns of threats such as plant poaching and rapid development in wetland areas, which can destroy their natural habitat. He urges the public to help protect these plants, noting that preserving their environment benefits many other species as well.

He also reminds people that picking Venus flytraps is illegal and considered a felony in North Carolina.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Promotes Two To Major
