THE NEWS

Two BC Schools - Updates on Yondr Anti-Device Pouch Use

Students at Town Creek and Cedar Grove Middle Schools are now required to place their phones and personal devices into Yondr pouches during the school day as part of a pilot program to reduce distractions. The magnetically sealed pouches remain closed until the end of the day.

A recent update to Brunswick County school leaders showed strong teacher support, with over 85% reporting the program as very effective. Teachers have noted a sharp drop in classroom distractions, with less need for phone-related discipline strategies.

Superintendent Dale Cole stated that the pouches enhance existing district policies and help students break the habit of constantly checking their devices, leading to better classroom engagement. Safety measures remain in place through alternative communication systems.

Principal Rebecca Heitz observed increased student interaction during social times and fewer issues with phone misuse in bathrooms. While most teachers view the program positively, only about 55% say students feel even somewhat positive about it. The impact on academic performance is still being assessed. From the Boiling Springs Lakes FB Page: We've been receiving reports of a scam going around from callers claiming to be officers with the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department. If you receive a call from someone stating they are one of our officers and you missed jury duty or any kind of court date, please know that it is likely a scam. We will never call you and demand that you stay on the phone until we come to issue you a citation and will not ask you for any type of payment over the phone. If you do receive a call like this, please do not give out any of your personal or financial information! If you would like to verify a call you receive from one of our officers, you can call 910-363-0011 during business hours or 9-1-1.

Town of Leland Adopt Safe Streets and Roads Plan

The Town of Leland has adopted the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to improve transportation safety for all residents and visitors. Funded by a U.S. Department of Transportation grant, the plan aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by promoting safer walking, biking, rolling, and driving.

Using crash data, existing transportation plans, and community input, the plan identifies key priorities such as safer intersections, reduced vehicle speeds, and improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. It focuses on cost-effective, equitable solutions.

Mayor Brenda Bozeman emphasized the plan’s role in guiding meaningful safety improvements and creating a more connected community. Leland will use the plan to guide future development, prioritize projects, and seek further funding to enhance roadway safety. See the whole story at the Town of Leland’s Website.
