Another Day, Another Text Scam
Local agencies are warning residents about a scam impersonating the DMV, which uses legal-sounding language and threats of license suspension to trick people into clicking a fake payment link for a supposed traffic violation. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson say the scam mimics recent toll text scams and has led to a surge in complaints. Officials stress that legitimate government agencies will never send threatening texts, request personal information, or charge service fees via random email addresses or text responses. The DMV urges people not to click any suspicious links and to report scam texts to mobile carriers or the FTC at www.ftc.gov/complaint. (WECT)
Sergeant Nathan Kye of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to stop at a red light. Chick-Fil-A of Leland employee Cora Cartrette was killed in the incident that occurred on Saturday, February 18th. Kye was in pursuit of a vehicle driven by Antoine Graham who was charged with multiple moving violations in addition to a drug charge.
