THE NEWS

Oak Island Reports Rise in Lost Children; Officials Urge Parents to Plan Ahead

Oak Island officials are urging parents to have a plan in place after several children have gone missing at the beach or public events this summer. According to Fire Chief Lee Price, about half a dozen children have become lost, often by wandering off or losing sight of their families. In one case, a child ran over a mile in the wrong direction before being located by drone.

Visiting families like the Corsinis from Virginia say they always keep close watch and establish safety rules. Price recommends parents teach children to identify location markers like rescue tube signs, set a designated meeting point, and take a photo of everyone before heading out. If a child goes missing, parents should call 911 immediately. (WECT)

State Announces $20 Million in Roofing Grants for Coastal Homeowners

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has announced a \$20 million grant program to help coastal homeowners upgrade their roofs ahead of storm season. Part of the 2025 “Strengthen Your Coastal Roof” initiative and funded by the North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association, the program offers up to \$6,000 per household for fortified roof upgrades designed to resist hurricanes and severe weather. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Homeowners in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties are eligible. More details and application information are available at StrengthenYourCoastalRoof.com. (WWAY)

Leland Town Council Delays Decision on Potential Flood Zone Development Ordinance Changes

The Leland Town Council postponed decisions on proposed ordinance changes for flood zone development during their Thursday meeting. The changes aimed to limit development density in flood zones and raise home height requirements above floodplains, prompted by repeated flooding in areas like Stoney Creek. While some developers opposed the changes, Councilman Bill McHugh emphasized that public safety is the priority. Discussions on the proposals will continue at next month’s agenda meeting. (WWAY)
