THE NEWS

House Explosion in Magnolia Greens

Two days after a powerful explosion in the Magnolia Greens neighborhood, town officials in Leland are still assessing damage and continuing cleanup efforts. The blast occurred Friday evening on Suncrest Way in the Three Oaks section, severely damaging four homes and rendering them uninhabitable. About 70 nearby homes were inspected, with most sustaining only minor damage.

Residents described the explosion as sounding like a bomb, and many rushed outside to check on neighbors. Town officials, including Chief Building Official Daniel Knoch, emphasized safety and support for those affected. Duke Energy and the American Red Cross responded to assist with utility and emergency needs.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, and a community meeting will be scheduled to provide updates and answer residents’ questions. Read more at wwaytv3.com.

Dog Storm Shelter Planned for Brunswick County

Paws Place Dog Rescue in Brunswick County is raising funds to build an 1,800-square-foot, two-story storm shelter due to frequent flooding worsened by nearby residential development. The nonprofit, which has operated since 1999, has already raised over $85,000 toward its $150,000 goal. The shelter will protect dogs, staff, and equipment during severe weather events.

Flooding, especially during Hurricane Florence in 2018, has repeatedly damaged the current facility and forced stressful evacuations. More recent storms, including 2023's Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, have brought dangerously high water levels to the site. Increasing development, such as the 264-home Saltgrass Landing project, has reduced natural water absorption, making even minor storms a flooding threat.

The new shelter will include climate control, backup power, and storage, providing vital protection and peace of mind for the rescue's staff and roughly 125 dogs it adopts out annually. Fundraising continues through August. Read the whole story at portcitydaily.com.
