Bogus Breast Cancer Fundraising Group Closed After Scam Exposed

A fake charity, Kars-R-Us.com, has been shut down after raising $45 million while falsely claiming proceeds from donated cars would help women with breast cancer. The group only donated about $126,000. Following a lawsuit by NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, operator Michael Irwin is banned from fundraising, and owner Lisa Frank is barred from making false claims. The settlement also requires proof for all future fundraising claims, with a $4 million penalty if financial misrepresentations are discovered. (WECT)
