THE NEWS
New Documentary Sheds Light on Threatened Venus Flytrap in SENC
Documentary filmmaker Robert Ford, known for award-winning projects like The Deepest Breath and Rising Phoenix, is creating a new film called Flytrap Town about the threatened Venus flytrap, which grows only within 75 miles of Wilmington, NC. The film will combine groundbreaking macro cinematography with the stories of local volunteers, scientists, and wildlife officers working to protect the plant. Among them is Kathy Sykes and her group, Venus Flytrap Champions, who relocate plants from development sites to safe habitats. While poaching was once a major threat, both Ford and Sykes stress that rapid development now poses the greatest danger. Ford has made several trips to Brunswick County to document this issue and plans to continue filming through next spring, but he needs additional funding to complete the project. The documentary is expected to release in late 2026 or early 2027. (WECT)
Hurricane Brunswick County Health Survey Seeks Input from Local Residents
Brunswick County Health Services is conducting its 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment to better understand the county’s most pressing health concerns.
Residents are encouraged to share their feedback on local programs and resources through an anonymous survey, available in English and Spanish. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and will remain open through October 3.
You can access the survey online, or pick up a paper copy at Brunswick County Health Services in Bolivia, any of the six Brunswick Senior Resource Centers, or any of the five county library branches.
