THE NEWS

Allergy Season Is Upon Us!

Human Rights Organization

An international advocacy group, EarthRights, has joined local residents in Brunswick County to push for improved access to clean water for African American and low-income communities. Residents, particularly those in unincorporated areas like Navassa, Winnabow, and Supply, have long been reliant on unsafe well water for daily needs, often having to choose between buying bottled water or medication. Despite repeated requests to the county over the past two decades, many have not received access to municipal water lines. EarthRights, in partnership with the Brunswick County NAACP, has urged the county to prioritize these water extensions, especially given recent federal budget cuts that have reduced funding opportunities. The county’s classification as a relatively prosperous Tier 3 area limits its eligibility for state grants, further complicating efforts to address the issue.

Despite the county’s active involvement in 19 ongoing water and wastewater-related projects, local advocates and residents argue that the county has sufficient resources to address the water crisis without relying solely on grants. The county’s water fund, which generates significant revenue from development, could potentially be used to fund water infrastructure projects. However, critics contend that the county has been mismanaging funds, pointing to the increasing cost of water installation fees that many residents cannot afford. Local leaders like former commissioner Charles Warren and advocacy groups like Clean Cape Fear argue that Brunswick’s wealth and the growing water crisis in marginalized communities demand a more immediate and comprehensive response from local officials.
