Benefit Car Wash for Injured Firefighter This Saturday

A Brunswick County firefighter, Chris Anselmo, remains in critical condition in the ICU after a motorcycle accident in Wilmington last week. To support him and his family, several local fire departments—including Sunset Harbor-Zion Hill and Bolivia—are organizing fundraisers.

This Saturday, a car wash will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3848 Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia, with all proceeds going directly to Anselmo and his family. An additional fundraiser is planned for June. Colleagues describe Anselmo as a dedicated EMT and firefighter with a strong sense of humor and a heart for service. See the story at wwaytv3.com.

Kids WANT Their Phones Take Away?

Brunswick County Schools’ pilot program using YONDR pouches to lock students' phones during the school day has seen unexpected success, leading to its expansion across all county middle schools.

The program, launched at Town Creek and Cedar Grove middle schools, requires students to place their phones in locked magnetic pouches during school hours. The initiative has led to improved student engagement, attendance, and fewer disciplinary issues. Both teachers and students report positive outcomes, with some students even appreciating the break from their phones.

Due to the program's success, it will expand this fall to include all middle schools in the county, as well as Rise Academy and Achieve Academy at the Center of Applied Sciences and Technology. The expansion will cost $78,000, funded from the district's fund balance, and will cover pouch costs for the next four years. Read the whole story at wect.com.

Alligator Just Wants to Have Fun - This Time in Sunset Beach

From the Sunset Beach Facebook Page: Officers Arp and Morris safely relocated an alligator found lounging on a local pool deck, handling the unusual situation with calm and professionalism. Residents are reminded not to touch or approach wildlife—especially baby deer—and to call authorities if animals appear to be in unsafe locations.
