THE NEWS
Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry to Enforce Vehicle Weight Limits
The NC Department of Transportation has placed temporary weight restrictions on the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry after damage to the Southport terminal ramp. Vehicles over 18 tons, such as tractor-trailers, dump trucks, heavy machinery, and fuel tankers, are prohibited, though school buses, campers, trucks, and trailers are still allowed. The restrictions will remain in place until ramp repairs are completed. (WECT)
Annual Water Treatment Change: Brunswick Co. Utilities Moving to Chlorine in October
Brunswick County Public Utilities will temporarily switch from chloramines to chlorine for water disinfection as part of its annual flushing program, running October 7 through November 2025. The change, mandated by the NC Department of Environmental Quality, helps improve disinfection efficiency. Customers may notice a different taste or smell in their water during this time, which can be reduced by storing it in an open container in the refrigerator. (WECT)
Navassa officials discussed police coverage at their latest agenda meeting, as the town continues without its own police department. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has been providing patrols, and attorneys for both the town and sheriff’s office are negotiating an agreement for dedicated officers. A decision is expected by the September 18 council meeting. Councilmember Ernest Mooring Jr. emphasized that while coverage has always been provided, it has not been dedicated. (WWAY)
