Volunteer Openings on the Town of Leland Board and Committee

The Town of Leland is looking for volunteers for the Economic Development Committee, Planning Board, and Board of Adjustment. The window for application closes on March 27th at 5pm. If interested, visit the Town of Leland website for instructions on how to apply.

Therapy Dogs Visit Brunswick Medical Center

Each week, certified therapy dogs visit Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center to provide emotional support to patients, staff, and visitors. One of those dogs is Ginger, a 5½-year-old golden doodle, who volunteers with her handler, Vicki Crawford. Ginger is one of 12 therapy dogs at the facility.

Crawford, a first-time dog owner, was encouraged by others to share Ginger’s calming presence through pet therapy. They volunteer for two hours weekly, with Ginger greeting people in the lobby and visiting patients who request a therapy dog.

Volunteer coordinator Penny Dorton emphasizes that the dogs uplift not only patients but also hospital staff and visitors. Crawford says the visits are especially meaningful for patients missing pets at home, helping distract them from their hospital stay. Initially unsure about pet therapy, Crawford is now a strong advocate and encourages others to get involved, noting the profound impact the dogs have on everyone they meet.
