THE NEWS

Excess of 1,000 Gallons of Sewage Spilled into Calabash River

Brunswick County Public Utilities reported that nearly 1,100 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the Calabash River on Monday, Aug. 18, around 9:00 PM. The discharge came from a manhole near 1232 Riverview Drive and was caused by a power failure at one of the pump stations. County staff began restoring power to the station at about 9:30 PM, recovered the wastewater, and had repairs completed by 10:30 PM. (WECT)

Long Pine Drive Paint Striping Today

Crews will be on Long Pine Drive tomorrow, Aug. 20, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM completing pavement markings. Traffic will be routed around the striping truck, so drivers should expect minor delays and use extra caution while traveling through the area.

Hurricane Erin Update

Hurricane Erin Wind Speed Probabilities

Hurricane Erin, with sustained winds near 100 mph, is moving north-northwest at 13 mph and is expected to track between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda before passing south of Atlantic Canada this weekend.

Warnings in effect:

Storm Surge Warning: Cape Lookout to Duck, NC (2–4 ft possible surge).

Tropical Storm Warning: Beaufort Inlet, NC to the NC/VA border, including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.

Tropical Storm Watch: North of the NC/VA border to Chincoteague, VA, and Bermuda.

Tropical storm conditions are expected in the NC Outer Banks late today into tonight, with possible impacts in Virginia and Bermuda Thursday into Friday. Erin’s large wind field extends tropical-storm-force winds up to 265 miles from its center.

Hazards include life-threatening surf and rip currents along the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast, and Atlantic Canada; storm surge flooding of 2–4 feet in parts of coastal NC; and 1–2 inches of rain for the Outer Banks. Erin may strengthen slightly before weakening later this week but is forecast to remain a hurricane into the weekend. (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov)

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Bingo at Gio Fund Event Center

The Gio Fund Event Center, located at 117 Village Rd NE Unit G in Leland, NC, hosts Wednesday Night Bingo each week. Doors open at 5:00 PM, with early bird games beginning at 6 p.m. and regular Bingo starting at 6:30 PM Participants are required to purchase a six-pack of ten games for $20, and additional sheets, food, and drinks are available for purchase. Prizes vary based on the number of cards sold, with the top prize for game 10 reaching up to $500. Outside food or drinks are not permitted, and Gio Card discounts do not apply to Bingo.

Trivia Night at Brunswick Beer XChange

Brunswick Beer XChange – BBX Bottle Shoppe, located at 113 Village Rd in Leland, NC, hosts trivia night every Thursday. The event runs for two hours and features a rotating selection of Wilmington-area food trucks offering different options each week. Prizes are awarded to both first and second place winners.

Thursday Night Flips (Pinball)

Throw Coast Disc Golf, located at 1026 Appleton Way, Unit 400 in Leland, hosts Thursday Night Flips, a casual weekly pinball league with the Cape Fear Flipper Club. Sign-ups begin at 6:30 p.m., matches start at 7 p.m., and the event runs about 2.5 hours. Open to all skill levels, the format is relaxed and perfect for both regulars and first-timers—no pre-registration or pressure, just fun. Entry is \$2 plus \$1 per game (typically five matches), with current machines including Guardians of the Galaxy, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Godzilla, Iron Maiden, Rush, Avatar, and more on the way. Players can also enjoy drink specials from the Throw Coast Bar, offering 50+ beers, ciders, seltzers, THC seltzers, wine, and more.
