THE NEWS
Brunswick County Habitat Starts It’s First Subdivision
Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity has begun building its first subdivision, with 10 homes planned off Old Fayetteville Road in Leland. The first home belongs to Karen Pearson, who is fulfilling the program’s requirement of 300 "sweat equity" hours by helping with construction and volunteering. Habitat homeowners purchase their homes through low-interest mortgages. Pearson, a single adult applicant, has already completed over 100 hours and is preparing financially for home ownership. The organization, founded in 1993, is nearing construction of its 100th home and has announced plans for another subdivision in Calabash. For more info - visit wwaytv3.com

School Calendar Flexibility Makes Way Through NC Senate
The North Carolina Senate has passed Senate Bill 754, offering school districts a new option for starting the academic year earlier—no sooner than the Monday closest to August 19 and ending by the Friday before Memorial Day. The current calendar remains an option. The bill, approved 39-7, also introduces penalties for districts that violate calendar laws. Senator Amy Galey stated the bill balances flexibility with accountability. It now moves to the state House for consideration.
