Brunswick County Planning Board Greenlights 1,650+ Single-Family Home Development on Hooper Road
The Brunswick County Planning Board has approved Blue Fern Development’s plan for 1,670 single-family homes on Hooper Road in Leland, despite opposition from nearby residents concerned about flooding, school capacity, and infrastructure strain. The revised proposal, which addressed earlier board concerns, includes plans to work with NCDOT to improve I-140 and US 74 ramps at Mt. Misery Road. The board’s chair, Clifton Cheek, cast the deciding vote, citing the project’s design and compliance with regulations. The board also approved the 102-home Parker Tract subdivision in the Shallotte/Supply area. (WWAY)
Brunswick County Public Utilities Lifts Water Conservation Alert
Brunswick County Public Utilities has lifted its Stage 1 Water Conservation Alert, effective August 12, after recent rainfall and conservation efforts eased demand on the water system. Issued June 26, the alert applied to customers of BCPU, Holden Beach Utilities, Oak Island Utilities, and Ocean Isle Beach Utilities, but not Brunswick Regional–H2GO customers. Officials warn that dry conditions could prompt future alerts and encourage residents to follow the county’s irrigation schedule and avoid watering lawns on Mondays or during peak hours from 5–11 a.m. (WECT)
