THE NEWS
Park Completion Delays Causes Leland to Push For Completion
The Town of Leland is continuing renovations at Founders Park despite construction delays and quality concerns. Originally set to reopen in late 2024, the park remains an active construction site. A major setback occurred in September due to an alignment error in the amphitheater, which has since been removed from the contractor’s scope and will be re-bid.
While the amphitheater delay shouldn't have affected other parts of the project, town officials cite slow progress and issues with workmanship. The contractor missed the substantial completion deadline in November and may face liquidated damages. The Town is also withholding 5% of the project cost until all work meets contract standards.
Leland hopes to reopen finished areas as work continues and is planning to host its annual Leland in Lights event at the park. To help manage potential issues, the Town Council has authorized the Town Manager to settle any arising claims. (WWAY)
Brunswick County Gets New Historical Marker
A new historical marker unveiled at Brunswick Town honors a pivotal but often overlooked moment in North Carolina’s Revolutionary War history. Funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and placed by the Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Patriot Marker commemorates the July 18, 1775 uprising when over 500 local patriots, led by Robert Howe and John Ashe, stormed and burned Fort Johnston—an early act of armed resistance against British rule.
The dedication is part of DAR’s America 250! campaign ahead of the U.S. semiquincentennial in 2026, which also marks the local DAR chapter’s 50th anniversary. This is the first Pomeroy Foundation-funded marker in North Carolina.
The ceremony included descendants of militia members, period reenactors, and emotional reflections from DAR members like Teresa McLamb, who discovered her Revolutionary ancestry later in life. The marker now stands as a permanent reminder of the region’s critical role in America’s path to independence. (WECT)
Flood Zone Development Ordinance Changes Tabled
The Leland Town Council has postponed a decision on proposed changes to flood zone ordinances. The proposed updates included limiting development density and raising the required elevation of new homes in flood-prone areas. Prompted by repeated flooding in neighborhoods like Stoney Creek, the changes aim to enhance public safety. However, several developers voiced concerns about the negative impact on their projects. Councilman Bill McHugh emphasized the importance of smart, safe, and sustainable growth, calling the issue a matter of public safety. Discussions will resume at the council’s next agenda meeting.
