THE NEWS
BCSO Warns Public of Housing Rental Scam
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a rental scam after a citizen reported being asked to pay a $100 “approval fee” via Venmo or Chime by someone posing as “Andre Anderson.” The scam involved gaining access to a home with unlocked doors and windows under false pretenses. Property management later confirmed the listing details were fraudulent.
BCSO advises renters to always verify listings with property managers, be cautious about sending money through apps, and trust their instincts if something seems suspicious. Anyone with similar experiences should contact BCSO at 910-253-2777. (WECT)
New Study Detects Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Sea Foam on North Carolina Beaches
A new study has found high levels of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” in sea foam along North Carolina beaches, including Oak Island and Carolina Beach State Park. Researchers say PFAS, which float on the water’s surface, can become highly concentrated in foam formed by wind and waves. Clean Cape Fear co-founder Emily Donovan cautioned residents to be aware of the potential risks, noting there are still unanswered questions about the safety of swimming or touching the foam. She hopes the findings will push state officials to investigate the sources and impacts of these chemicals on local beaches. (WWAY)
Public Hearings Delayed on Carolina Bays Parkway Extension into North Carolina
The North Carolina and South Carolina Departments of Transportation have postponed public hearings on the proposed Carolina Bays Parkway extension due to the threat of severe weather. Originally set for September 29 and 30, the hearings will be rescheduled, with new dates to be announced. The project calls for a multi-lane freeway connecting S.C. 9 in Horry County to U.S. 17 near Shallotte in Brunswick County. (WECT)
Indigo Dyeing Revives History in Brunswick County
Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site hosted “The Carolina Blues: Indigo on the Cape Fear,” giving visitors a chance to explore history through hands-on indigo dyeing. Participants learned how 18th-century laborers fermented and extracted dye from indigo plants and tried resist dyeing themselves. Historical interpreters Abby Williams and Andrew Craver emphasized the value of interactive learning, noting it helps people connect with regional history in a tangible way. After the workshop, guests were encouraged to tour the site and deepen their understanding of the area’s past. (WWAY)
