THE NEWS
Fishermen Say Industry is in Danger
Brunswick County shrimpers like Brad Robbins are voicing strong concerns over a proposed amendment to House Bill 442 in the North Carolina General Assembly. Originally intended to restore the recreational flounder season, the bill now includes a Senate-added amendment that would ban trawling in all inshore waters and within a half-mile of the coast—posing a major threat to the commercial shrimping industry.
Local fishermen argue that such a ban would make it nearly impossible to catch shrimp, which are essential to the industry. Thousands protested the amendment in Raleigh, and bipartisan criticism has emerged over the lack of public input.
The amendment, introduced by Senator Bill Rabon, has also led to legal trouble after a Brunswick County man allegedly made death threats against Rabon and other senators.
Fisherman Ricky Crabtree, with over 40 years of experience, expressed frustration over the process, noting that some lawmakers were barely informed before the vote. Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton emphasized that both parties should listen to public opinion when crafting policy.
Robbins warned that if passed, the amendment could devastate North Carolina’s commercial fishing economy, shutting down fish houses and threatening the livelihoods of many. HB 442 has now returned to the House for further consideration. (WWAY)

This championship not only represents a major milestone for the NBHS program but also marked a bittersweet farewell to First Sergeant Williams, as it was his final match before retirement. His leadership and dedication have been instrumental in the team's growth and success. Ending his career with a national title is a fitting tribute to his impact on the program.
