THE NEWS
Brunswick County Woman Thanks Those Who Saved Her
Months after surviving a devastating house fire, Brunswick County resident Elizabeth Long reunited with and thanked the first responders who saved her life. The fire began when a fuse box exploded in her garage, quickly trapping her in a smoke-filled room. Long, who suffered burns on over 40% of her body, called 911 and was rescued by Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill firefighters, including Captain James Skipper and firefighter Sam Smith.
At a recognition event, Long met her rescuers face-to-face for the first time, along with Brunswick County EMS and 911 center staff. She expressed deep gratitude for their efforts and support during her emergency and recovery. Other burn survivors also attended and offered Long encouragement.
Although still coping with emotional trauma, Long remains thankful for the heroes who helped her survive. She and her husband are now planning to find a new home as she continues her healing journey. Read more at wwaytv3.com.
Al’s Burger Shack Recognized Nationally
Al’s Burger Shack was named the “Best Burger in North Carolina” by Chowhound in its national roundup. Originally opened in Chapel Hill in 2013, Al’s expanded to Leland in 2024, with a new location near Lowe’s in the Leland Town Center. The Leland spot offers both indoor seating and a family- and dog-friendly covered patio. Read the story at wwaytv3.com.
Southport Parking Plan Presented at Alderman Meeting
At the June 2 Board of Aldermen meeting, Southport leaders reviewed a proposed paid parking plan from Otto Connect. The plan suggests offering free or discounted parking permits for residents and property owners, valid for the calendar year and season. Proposed rates include $5 per hour for up to 2 hours in premium areas, with a $5 one-hour extension, and $3 per hour in non-premium areas. A color-coded map was also presented, designating premium, discount, and permit-required zones. Read more at wect.com.
