THE NEWS
Leland to Host Its First Fall Festival
The Town of Leland will host its first-ever Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 4–7 p.m. at Northwest District Park. The free, family-friendly event expands on the annual Trunk or Treat with games, activities, live DJ music, and a pumpkin patch where guests can decorate pumpkins and take photos at a festive display. Community partners, including local businesses and organizations, will line a trick-or-treat path with decorated booths, candy, and games. (Town Of Leland)
Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site to Host Fall Programs
Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site will host two free fall living history events showcasing historic crafts and trades. On Saturday, Sept. 27, “The Carolina Blues: Indigo on the Cape Fear” will highlight the role of enslaved African laborers in indigo dye production with demonstrations and hands-on activities. On Saturday, Oct. 18, visitors can experience colonial life through demonstrations of blacksmithing, woodworking, cooking, baking, candle dipping, games, and an active tar kiln essential to naval stores production. Public Advised to Steer Clear of Algal Blooms Amid Health Concerns
The NC Department of Environmental Quality is cautioning the public to avoid discolored water, which may indicate harmful algal blooms capable of producing toxins dangerous to people and pets. These blooms can appear as bright surface scums, mats, or general water discoloration. The NC Department of Health and Human Services also advises avoiding contact with suspected blooms. Residents can report sightings to their local NCDEQ regional office or through the agency’s website. (WECT)

Storms in the Atlantic - Stay Vigilant
Hurricane Humberto, located about 465 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, has strengthened with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph and is moving northwest at 3 mph. Forecasters expect significant strengthening, with Humberto likely becoming a major hurricane this weekend. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, and hurricane-force winds currently extend 10 miles from the center, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching 105 miles. Minimum central pressure is 990 mb.
A tropical wave near Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands is becoming more organized, with a low-pressure system expected to form near the southeast Bahamas today. Forecasters say it will likely strengthen into a tropical depression as it moves toward the central and northwest Bahamas later today or this weekend. Heavy rain and gusty winds are already affecting the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos, and will likely spread to the Bahamas and eastern Cuba in the coming days. While the track remains uncertain, the risk of wind, rain, and storm surge impacts along parts of the southeast U.S. coast is increasing. Formation chances are high—80% within 48 hours and 90% within 7 days.
