THE NEWS
Alligators Annoying Southport Residents.
Southport has set a record with 20 alligators captured and relocated so far this season. Officer Kate Marshall attributes the increase to ongoing development that makes gators more visible as natural habitats are reduced. Although alligator encounters have risen, Marshall emphasizes that they are rarely dangerous if left alone. Residents are advised not to approach, feed, or interfere with alligators and to call 911 if they feel threatened.

Duke Energy Gives to Summer Camp
The Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern North Carolina (BGCSNC) received a $5,000 donation from Duke Energy to support its first-ever summer camp in Brunswick County, held at Lincoln Elementary School. The funds will help expand programs in sports, education, arts, health, workforce readiness, and leadership development, including field trips and school prep activities. BGCSNC CEO Dawn-Michele Blalock said the donation allows the organization to serve more children and marks a key step forward in their mission. She expressed hopes to offer summer camp annually going forward. Read the rest of the story at wect.com.
Volunteer Openings on the Town of Leland Board and Committee
Today starting at 10:00 a.m. — The Town of Leland will host a Push-In Ceremony at Fire Station 51 (1984 Popular Street) to celebrate the arrival of Leland Fire/Rescue’s new state-of-the-art ladder truck.
The new Tractor Drawn Aerial (TDA) ladder truck, also known as a tiller, enhances emergency response capabilities and replaces two older vehicles. Staff have completed over 1,300 hours of training, and the truck officially went into service in April.
The public is invited to take part in this century-old fire service tradition, tour the station, meet firefighters and town leaders, and enjoy light refreshments. Children are welcome to explore the truck’s features, including its aerial ladder and advanced rescue tools.
Mayor Brenda Bozeman called the upgrade an “investment in the safety, resilience, and future” of Leland. The truck eliminates delays from equipment changes and improves emergency response times, with the older ladder truck now in reserve status.
