Leland Fire Truck Push In Ceremony Next Month

Leland’s Newest Fire Truck

The Town of Leland will host a Push-In Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 10 to 11 AM at Fire Station 52, 1379 River Road, to celebrate the arrival of Leland Fire/Rescue’s newest fire engine. This family-friendly event includes meeting firefighters and Town Council, touring the station, enjoying refreshments, and helping push the new engine into the bay—a tradition dating back to horse-drawn fire equipment. The new engine, equipped with advanced features like a 2,000-gallon-per-minute pump, a 750-gallon onboard tank, and electric hydraulic rescue tools, enhances the Town’s emergency response capabilities. Attendees are encouraged to carpool due to limited parking. (Town of Leland)

Hurricane Erin Weakens

Hurricane Erin, now a Category 2 storm with winds near 105 mph, is moving north-northeast at 17 mph and is expected to pass between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda before heading south of Atlantic Canada this weekend.

Warnings in effect:

  • Storm Surge Warning: Cape Lookout to Duck, NC (2–4 ft possible).

  • Tropical Storm Warning: Beaufort Inlet, NC to Chincoteague, VA, including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.

  • Tropical Storm Watch: Bermuda.

Tropical storm conditions are already impacting the NC Outer Banks and will spread into Virginia today. Strong winds and gusts are likely along the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts through early Friday, with possible impacts in Bermuda, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland later this week.

Hazards include life-threatening storm surge in parts of coastal NC, dangerous surf and rip currents across the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast, and Atlantic Canada, along with strong winds extending up to 320 miles from Erin’s center. Gradual weakening is expected, and Erin may become post-tropical by Saturday. (NOAA Hurricane Center)
