THE NEWS

NC Forest Service Has Lifted Burn Ban - Effective Today

The N.C. Forest Service has lifted the statewide burn ban, effective April 2 at 8 a.m., after recent rainfall reduced fire risks. The ban, which began on March 21 due to hazardous conditions, had restricted open burning across the state. While the ban is lifted, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler emphasized the importance of continued caution during wildfire season, particularly in Western North Carolina. However, burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling remains subject to local fire marshal regulations. Residents can now obtain burn permits from authorized agents or online, as all previously issued permits were canceled when the ban was enacted. You can get a permit online - https://apps.ncagr.gov/burnpermits/

NC Crop Loss Program Application Window is Open

The Agriculture Disaster Crops Loss Program is now accepting applications to assist farmers who suffered crop losses due to weather-related conditions in 2024. The program, part of a $524 million disaster relief package approved by the N.C. General Assembly, allocates $311 million to support affected farmers. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler emphasized the urgency of the program, calling it a vital lifeline for struggling farmers. Eligible applicants must have verifiable losses, operate in a disaster-affected area, and have planted or raised commodities before the disaster declaration date. Farmers must apply online by the May 4 deadline at ncagr.gov.

Leland 2045 Quarterly Update

Since adopting the Leland 2045 Comprehensive Plan in November 2021, the Town has used it to guide initiatives across all departments, ensuring sustainable growth and community well-being. The plan's progress is continuously assessed, with recent updates reflecting advancements in six key themes. Notable achievements from November 2024 to January 2025 include applying for a U.S. Forestry Service grant to conserve land, collaborating on a Tourism Development Strategic Plan, securing a grant for arts programming, and making infrastructure improvements such as sidewalk extensions and street resurfacing. Quarterly updates on the plan’s progress will be shared with the Town Council and the public via the Town’s website and social media. Read the release here.

Town of Leland to Host Screening of “Taking Care” to Support Caregivers

The Town of Leland invites the community to a free screening of Taking Care, a documentary produced by Seth Rogen, on April 23 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. The film explores Alzheimer’s disease through humor and personal experience. Hosted in partnership with the Caregiver Academy, the event aims to provide caregivers with support and resources while fostering an inclusive, age-friendly community. Attendees can enjoy complimentary refreshments and connect with local organizations offering assistance for caregivers and older adults. Feedback collected at the event will help shape Leland’s Age-Friendly Strategic Plan, which focuses on housing, transportation, social participation, and essential services. For more information - visit the Town of Leland’s website. It’s free and you can register online.
