Coast Guard Needs Help Tracking Down Prank Distress Callers

The Coast Guard is investigating a series of fake distress calls made from the Wilmington area, particularly Leland and Brunswick County. These hoax calls prompted costly rescue missions, with each potentially exceeding $40,000. Deputy Sector Commander John Suckow emphasized that such false alarms not only waste resources but also endanger those in real emergencies by diverting response efforts. Over the past six months, there have been eight similar incidents, and officials suspect the same individual is responsible. Making fake distress calls is a federal crime, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and reimbursement of response costs. The Coast Guard urges anyone with information to report it via the CGIS Tips website.

Leland to Get Ulta, Publix and More

The developer behind the new “Leland Village Shopping Center”, previously named “The Shoppes at Savannah Branch” named the grocery and two other stores that will be arriving soon. The anchor grocery store will be a Publix along with an Ulta Beauty and Marshalls.

Take Me Out to the Trash Dump! (For Free)

Breeze Airways announced new routes out of ILM starting this fall. They will be:

  • Akron-Canton, Ohio – Operates Mondays and Fridays, starting November 7, with fares from $49 one-way.

  • Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Operates Mondays and Fridays, starting November 7, with fares from $39 one-way.

  • Long Island-Islip, N.Y. – Operates Thursdays and Sundays, starting October 2, with fares from $49 one-way.

  • Tampa, Fla. – Operates Thursdays and Sundays, starting October 2, with fares from $39 one-way.

  • Orlando, Fla. – Existing service will double to four times weekly, with flights on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays starting in September.

Golf, Grill, and Re-Grip at the Golf Barn This Saturday

Saturday from 10am to 2pm visit The Golf Barn to get your clubs re-gripped, try them out on Toptracer and enjoy the long list of beverages including Peach “I Said What I Said” Draft. There will also be food trucks!

Sweat for Paws Fundraiser This Saturday at MissionFit

Join MissionFit on Saturday, May 10th at 8:30 AM for a heart-pumping community workout supporting Long Road Home Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to saving dogs from high-risk shelters in the South and placing them in loving homes along the East Coast.

Workout Details:

  • Cost: $10 for members & $15 for non-members

  • Payment: Cash or Venmo at the door

  • Adoptable Dogs: Meet furry friends from Long Road Home until 10:30 AM

  • Fill the Crate: We’re collecting donations all week leading up to the event inside the gym

Ghost Hunting (but no Ghost Busting) This Saturday at Brunswick Town

Carolina's Unknown has scheduled its next Group Ghost Hunt for May 10, 2025, at Brunswick Town & Fort Anderson. Participants will convene at the park entrance at 11:00 AM, and the park will close at 5:00 PM. Individuals are welcome to bring their paranormal equipment for use during the investigation.
