The Town of Belville has announced the passing of longtime Mayor Michael Allen, who died overnight at the age of 76. Town officials expressed gratitude for his dedication and service. Charles Bost has been appointed acting mayor. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon. (WWAY)

Following the death of incumbent Mayor Mike Allen, the Brunswick County Board of Elections has voted to reopen the candidate filing period for the Town of Belville mayoral race. Allen, one of two candidates, passed away before ballots were printed. Per state law, the filing period must reopen for five days. It will run from 8:30 a.m. on July 31 to 5 p.m. on August 6. Interested candidates must submit a Notice of Candidacy and a $15 filing fee. A daily updated list of candidates will be posted during the filing period. (WECT)

Blood Drive for Sickle Cell Disease

A Red Cross Blood Drive focused on supporting individuals with sickle cell anemia will take place on August 8 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at Independence Mall, in the Aveda Institute Wilmington (Dillard’s Wing). Hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the event accepts walk-ins, but online registration is also available.

Swim Advisories for Two Beach Access Points Issued

Pending swim advisories have been issued for two Brunswick County beaches due to elevated bacteria levels. Affected areas include the public beach access sites at First and Chadbourn Streets in Ocean Isle Beach and SE 58th Street and E. Beach Drive in Oak Island. Initial tests detected enterococci levels of 306 at Ocean Isle and 124 at Oak Island. Enterococci can cause various infections, including UTIs and wound infections. Additional water samples have been collected, and further testing will determine next steps. (WECT)
