THE NEWS
Varnamtown Boat Launch Goes to Paid Parking
The Town of Varnamtown is launching a new paid parking system at its public boat ramp from May 5 to October 15, 2025, with daily enforcement from 9am to 5pm. Varnamtown property owners will have a designated lot and receive one free parking permit per parcel, while visitors must use a separate lot. Parking fees are $40 per day for tandem vehicles and $20 for single vehicles. Trailers are prohibited from turning around in private or business lots, with turnarounds limited to designated town lots. Additional information on fund usage and potential changes is pending from the Town Council. Read the whole story at wwaytv3.com.
Carolina Beach Dredging Fully Funded
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District has awarded a \$23.5 million contract to Norfolk Dredging Company for the Carolina Beach and Vicinity Coastal Storm Risk Management project. After earlier difficulties finding a contractor due to dredging availability, the project is now fully funded for Fiscal Year 2026. Work is scheduled to take place between November and April and will involve dredging and placing beach-quality sand along the shoreline to reduce coastal storm risk. The rest of the details are at wect.com.
Bill Holding PFAS Polluters Accountable Passes House
House Bill 569, aimed at holding polluters accountable for PFAS contamination in North Carolina’s water supply, passed the House with strong bipartisan support (104–3) and is now headed to the Senate. The bill, championed by Rep. Ted Davis after five years of effort, would require companies like Chemours to pay for the cleanup of “forever chemicals” and reimburse utilities and ratepayers for costs dating back to 2017. While praised as a major step forward, some advocates, like Cape Fear River Watch’s Dana Sargent, argue the bill should also cover smaller utilities that have spent less than \$50 million. Supporters hope the Senate will side with constituents over corporate interests and pass the bill this session. Read the whole story at wect.com.
