THE NEWS

Beaches Minimally Impacted from Erin

As Hurricane Erin moves north, dangerous surf and red flag conditions continue along the Cape Fear coast. The storm’s closest approach Wednesday evening caused only minor impacts—some beach smoothing at Wrightsville, slight flooding at Carolina Beach canals, and minimal erosion overall. Officials warn that strong rip currents will persist through at least Friday and urge residents and visitors to stay out of the water and remain prepared for future storms. (WWAY)

Museum of Beer and Art to Open in Leland Today

A new brewery, the Museum of Beer and Art (MOBA), will open Friday at 9600 Ploof Road in Leland. The venture—led by Matt Ray, Carl Cross, and Jason “Foz” Fosdick—will serve beer, wine, and cocktails, with plans to add food trucks in the future. The team brings over 50 years of combined experience in the industry. Opening day hours are 3 to 10 PM. (WWAY)

Head-On Crash Injures Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Deputy

A Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy, Crystal Baker, was seriously injured in a head-on crash Wednesday morning on Holden Beach Road near Tatum Road. According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, a Dodge Caravan crossed the center line and struck Baker’s unmarked vehicle around 9 a.m. She sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other driver had minor injuries. Both were taken to the hospital, and the crash remains under investigation. (WECT)

Leland Council Weighs Stricter Flood Ordinance, Plans Community Workshops Amid Pushback

Leland Town Council is revisiting a proposed flood damage prevention ordinance that would raise building elevation requirements, ban structural fill, restrict residential density in flood zones, and expand regulations to 500-year flood areas. The measure, introduced after major flooding in 2024, has drawn strong opposition from developers and real estate groups, who argue it lacks scientific basis and could harm property values. With limited public input so far, council members now plan to hold community workshops involving residents, developers, and experts to gather feedback and examine legal and environmental impacts. While concerns remain about legality and practicality, council leaders stress the need for stronger protections as flooding risks grow. Workshops are expected within the next 30 to 60 days, likely in October. (Port City Daily)
