NCDEQ Awards Millions to Strengthen Public Access to State Beaches and Coastal Waters

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management has awarded over $2.25 million in grants to improve public access to beaches and coastal waterways. Projects include $265,000 for New Hanover County’s Trails End Waterfront Access, which will add a kayak launch, ADA parking, an accessible sidewalk, and new signage, and $82,500 for Ocean Isle Beach’s Shallotte Boulevard Access, which will replace a dune crossover with an ADA-compliant ramp and wider walkway. Funded through the Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access Grant Program, these investments aim to expand safe, inclusive access while strengthening coastal infrastructure against severe weather. Statewide Effort to Curb Impaired Driving Kicks Off with ‘Booze It & Lose It’ Campaign

North Carolina’s Governor’s Highway Safety Program has launched its “Booze It & Lose It” campaign ahead of Labor Day weekend, running through September 7, to combat impaired driving. The National Safety Council warns that more than 400 traffic deaths could occur nationwide during the holiday period. With heavier travel expected, Wilmington Police anticipate an uptick in alcohol-related incidents. In 2024, the campaign recorded 444 alcohol-related crashes statewide, including 11 fatalities. Officials say drivers can expect more checkpoints and police presence, emphasizing that planning ahead with a rideshare, taxi, or designated driver can prevent tragedies. The campaign’s goal is not only to save lives but also to raise awareness about the devastating impact of impaired driving. (WECT)
