This Sunday morning from 8:30am to 10:30am there will be a beach cleanup at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. They will provide the bags/buckets, water and gloves. They ask that you don’t bring any one-use gloves, water bottles or bags. There will also be a costume contest and coffee is available. For all the details and to register - visit the NC Aquarium’s Website.

Operation Fan Heat Relief - Free Fans for Seniors.

The OFHR program, running from May 1 to October 31, helps older adults and adults with disabilities stay cool and reduce heat-related illnesses by providing free fans—and in some counties, air conditioners—through local aging agencies. Funded by Duke Energy and Dominion Resources with no public money, the program has operated successfully since 1986 thanks to regional and local partnerships.

For Brunswick County the contact is Jennifer Sherman at Senior Resources in Shallotte (910-754-6297). The backup contact is Cape Fear Council of Governments at 910-395-4553.

For more information and heat-related tips for seniors visit the NC Department of Health and Human Resources Website.
