THE NEWS

Rip Current Awareness Week is Here

With summer approaching, the National Weather Service is raising awareness about ocean dangers, particularly rip currents, by sharing tips throughout the Carolinas during the first-ever Carolina Rip Current Awareness Week. Rip currents are strong, narrow flows that can pull swimmers far from shore and are the leading weather-related cause of death in North and South Carolina, causing nearly 200 deaths since 2000. Oak Island Water Rescue Chief Terry Hoben described how rip currents can be spotted from shore, often appearing as flat water between incoming waves. He emphasized that rip currents can form even under seemingly safe conditions, so swimmers should stay alert.

Another Alligator in Southport

From the Southport Police Facebook Page: Southport Police received a tip about a large alligator on West 11th Street and found it in a backyard near Caswell Avenue. Officers secured the area, alerted the resident, and called NC Wildlife due to the gator's large size (12–14 feet). With specialized equipment, NC Wildlife safely captured the alligator for relocation. Chief Coring thanked the citizen who reported it and praised the safe teamwork outcome.
