THE NEWS

National Park Service Awards $75,000 to Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources has received a $75,000 National Park Service grant to conduct a comprehensive archaeological assessment at Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson State Historic Site. The study will focus on the site’s waterfront, once home to a major colonial port, and aims to provide the first full evaluation since the 1960s. Using modern tools and technology, archaeologists hope to gain new insights into the colonial capital and ensure the long-term preservation of this historically significant site. (WWAY)

County Leaders Address Public Input Following Potential Tropical Cyclone 8

Brunswick County leaders reviewed community feedback on Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, which brought 12–20 inches of rain and flash flooding in September 2024. While residents praised the county’s emergency response, many felt communication about evacuations and road closures could have been stronger. Officials mainly relied on their website, phone lines, and social media, but encouraged residents to sign up for the county’s official ReadyBrunswickCountyNC.gov alert system to receive timely and accurate updates during future emergencies. Fire Chiefs Respond to Brunswick County’s Proposed Fire Tax Code Update

Brunswick County is considering changing its fire tax code, which currently charges residents based on the square footage and acreage of their property. The Brunswick County Fire Chiefs Association has recommended switching to a tax rate based on individual fire districts, arguing the current system no longer provides enough revenue for staffing and equipment as call volumes rise. Some local leaders, however, worry that a property value–based tax could unfairly burden coastal communities with higher land values. County staff are analyzing property data to determine potential tax rates, but results have not yet been released. (WWAY)

Highway Improvements Near Completion, Reopening Planned in Brunswick County

A portion of River Road (N.C. 133) near Funston Road in Brunswick County is scheduled to reopen on September 5, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The roadway has been closed since December 2024 while crews replaced a drainage pipe with a larger aluminum one and installed multiple additional pipes, along with a nearly 400-foot bridge and culvert. NCDOT says the improvements will strengthen the road and surrounding area, making them more resilient during future storms. (WECT)
