Fire Chief Responds to Concerns Over Brunswick County Controlled Burn

Sunset Beach Fire Chief Richard Childres addressed concerns about smoke from an Aug. 12 controlled burn near Angels Trace Road, explaining the site is in the town’s Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction where local burn ordinances don’t apply. The contractor had a valid N.C. Forest Service Burn Permit, and residents are asked to direct smoke-related complaints to the Forest Service rather than calling 911. (WECT)

ECU Archaeologists Uncover New Insights into Shipwrecks at Brunswick Town Historic Site

East Carolina University archaeologists have uncovered four shipwrecks and well-preserved colonial waterfront structures at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Brunswick County. One wreck may be La Fortuna, a Spanish privateer that exploded during a 1748 attack, based on wood sourced from the Spanish Caribbean and its location near a recovered cannon linked to the ship. Other finds include a vessel used for land reclamation, a potential colonial flatboat, and an unidentified wreck, along with timber-crib wharves, a causeway, and artifacts revealing details of colonial trade and daily life. These discoveries are threatened by shoreline erosion from dredging, storms, and wave action. A $2.5 million NOAA grant will help expand living shoreline protections to safeguard the site. (WWAY)
