Another Alligator Goes for a Swim!

This past Saturday afternoon Southport police officers were called to E Moore Street about an alligator in a pool. The alligator was safely captured and relocated by officers and their APS Officer, according to their facebook post.

Brunswick County Sheriff Office Bloodhound Visits Pre-School

Insurance Rates to Increase for Some

Homeowners in North Carolina's Cape Fear region should expect an insurance rate increase starting June 1, 2025. This follows a settlement between Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and the N.C. Rate Bureau, ending a legal dispute over a proposed homeowners’ insurance hike.

Originally, insurers sought an average 42.2% statewide increase—with up to 99.4% in coastal areas like Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties. The final agreement instead limits the increase to 7.5% annually over two years (2025 and 2026), with a ca p of 35% in any area. The three coastal counties mentioned will see a 10.5% increase. The Department of Insurance has released a table so you can see how much your rates will increase.

The agreement also blocks further rate hike attempts before June 1, 2027, saving homeowners an estimated $777 million. Commissioner Causey described the outcome as a win for consumers, balancing affordability with insurers' need to cover disaster-related claims and rising reinsurance costs. Read more at wwaytv3.com.

Town of Leland is Recognized as a City of Civility

The Town of Leland has been recognized as a City of Civility by the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM), highlighting its Town Council’s commitment to respectful, empathetic, and ethical leadership. This honor is part of NCLM’s Commit to Civility program, which promotes civil and effective governance.

To earn the recognition, at least 75% of elected officials had to complete civility training—Leland exceeded this with all five Council members and the Town Clerk participating. The Council approved the resolution in May, officially meeting all program requirements.

Leland is one of only six municipalities in North Carolina, out of more than 500, to achieve this designation. Read more at the Town of Leland website.

Big Bang Boom for Pre-Schoolers to 5th Grade Today at 2pm

Big Bang Boom plays live, interactive, educational children's music! The show is energetic, fun, AND it's parent friendly- there's no sitting down at a Big Bang Boom party! Preschool-Grade 5. The show will take place at 2pm TODAY at the Leland Library in the meeting room. The Leland Library is located at 487 Village Rd NE.

“A Wild Goose Chase” for Kids Tomorrow!

Poetry springs hilariously to life as soon as shadow puppets hit the screen! A Wild Goose Chase is an interactive live performance that combines shadow puppetry with poetry. Young people will be entertained, engaged, and inspired to read and write poetry on their own! Recommended for ages 4 and above. The show will take place at 2pm TOMORROW at the Leland Library in the meeting room. The Leland Library is located at 487 Village Rd NE.

Learn to Play Poker Tomorrow at the Gio Fund Event Center

Learn how to play poker with instructor Jerry Vesely. This is a beginners class, no experience needed. Afterward practice what you have learned at our World Tavern Poker Tournament. There is never a cost to enter. Seating is limited, so please register online.
