Investigation Begins in Leland Home Explosion

New details have emerged about last month’s home explosion in Leland’s Magnolia Greens neighborhood. According to Fire Chief Ronnie Hayes, the investigation officially began Thursday, after time was needed to set up equipment and bring in investigators. The State Bureau of Investigation, State Fire Marshal, and the HOA’s insurance representatives are involved. While nearby residents can still access their homes, the road will remain closed for two days during the investigation. Authorities are testing gas lines and equipment for leaks but do not suspect foul play. A definitive cause may take months or even years to determine. (WWAY)

Sunset Beach PD Removes 8 Foot Alligator

An 8-foot alligator surprised beachgoers at Sunset Beach when it entered the ocean near 10th Street around 1:47 PM. Sergeant Gray responded to the scene, safely removed the alligator using a catch pole, and ensured the safety of nearby onlookers. After securing the animal, he provided information about alligator safety and awareness. The alligator was later relocated to a nearby pond following standard procedures. Sergeant Gray, certified by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, is trained to handle such situations. Authorities remind the public that alligators are protected by state law, should never be approached or fed, and that any concerning sightings should be reported to local law enforcement. (Facebook)

Carolina Beach Grocery Store is Getting Updates

A historic Carolina Beach grocery store, formerly known as Sea Merchants, has reopened under new ownership as the Carolina Beach Market and Deli. Located on Cape Fear Boulevard, the store is now co-owned by Cassandra Tollens and Joan Mitchell, who have begun renovations including fresh paint, new windows, reorganized shelves, and fully restocked inventory.

The owners aim to better serve local residents by focusing on community needs and offering requested products. A second renovation phase, planned for fall, will add a deli, coffee counter, and bakery. Emphasizing a local, personalized shopping experience rather than competing with large grocery chains, the store also plans to host events such as paint-and-sip nights, book clubs, and beer tastings. The market is now open for the season and welcomes former staff to rejoin the team. (WWAY)

Groovy Summer Market Tomorrow at Leland Brewing Company

Leland Brewing Company will host the Groovy Summer Market on June 21 from 12–4 PM. The event will feature tie-dye and retro-inspired vendors, local pottery, henna tattoos, face painting, and over 20 local vendors. Attendees can enjoy live music, craft brews, and handcrafted coffee while shopping and enjoying the summer atmosphere. LBC is located at 2115 Ale Avenue

Volleyball Tournament Tomorrow

Wilmington Beach Academy in Leland is hosting the first event in its Twilight Tournament Series on June 21. This recreational 3’s volleyball tournament offers an evening of fun, friendly competition and beach vibes. Check-in begins at 5:00 PM, with games starting at 5:30 PM. Players can register at WilmingtonBeachAcademy.com and are encouraged to gather their teammates for a memorable evening of volleyball and community. WBA is located at 9892 Wayne Street in Leland.

Potluck This Sunday at BBX

Brunswick Beer XChange and DJ Rewind Selector will host their monthly potluck on Sunday, June 22 at 113 Village Road, Leland, NC. The event begins at 3 PM and invites attendees to bring a favorite dish to share while enjoying music from DJ Rewind Selector. The event is open to the public.
