THE NEWS
Leland Police Department Seeks Accreditation
The Leland Police Department will participate in an on-site assessment by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA) program on August 6, 2025, as part of its effort to achieve official accreditation. This process is designed to verify that the department meets established professional standards for law enforcement agencies.
The NCLEA assessment will evaluate key operational areas such as policies and procedures, administration, training, support services, safety practices, facilities management, and recordkeeping. Meeting these standards is essential to providing high-quality, accountable public safety services.
Agency staff and members of the public are encouraged to submit comments regarding the department’s compliance with NCLEA standards. All feedback must be submitted by August 5, 2025, and will be reviewed by the assessment team.
To learn more about NCLEA standards, visit the North Carolina Department of Justice website and search under Law Enforcement Training. (Town of Leland Website)

Brunswick County to Consider Four New Developments
The Brunswick County Planning Board is reviewing proposals that could add approximately 2,200 single-family homes across unincorporated parts of the county, reflecting continued rapid growth in North Carolina’s fastest-growing county.
Development Breakdown:
Hooper Road (Near Northwest/Leland):
Largest proposal with 1,676 homes on 594 acres, revised from a previous plan of 1,722 units. Concerns remain about traffic congestion and limited emergency access. Projected to generate 14,500 daily vehicle trips. Open and recreational space has been expanded, and a phased build-out is planned.
Folly Hills (Near Bolivia):
A 204-home development on 146 acres with low-density zoning. The plan includes significant buffers, stormwater infrastructure, and over 94 acres of open space. Expected to add nearly 2,000 daily trips. Road improvements and driveway connections are included in the proposal.
Sailors Haven (Near Sunset Beach):
Proposed 299-home development on 117 acres. While the zoning allows for higher density, the plan seeks just 2.5 units per acre. It includes 36.7 acres of open space, stormwater systems, and road improvements. Drainage concerns have been raised due to the site’s location in Carolina Bay.
Oxpen Oaks (Near Holden Beach/Shallotte):
The smallest project, proposing 15 homes on 6.67 acres. The plan exceeds open space requirements and includes buffers and protections for nearby wetlands. No traffic impact study is required due to its small size.
If approved, these developments could significantly expand housing capacity in Brunswick County, though some projects have raised concerns about infrastructure, traffic, and emergency access. The planning board will make final decisions unless any proposals are appealed to the county commissioners. (Port City Daily)
