Town of Leland Receives AARP Grant for Pedestrian Safety
The Town of Leland has received a \$15,000 AARP Community Challenge Demonstration Grant, supported by Toyota Motor North America, to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. The funds will be used to install eight audible pedestrian signals (APS) at crosswalks along Village Road Northeast, Northgate Drive, and Lee Drive. These signals, the first in Leland, provide audio cues to assist pedestrians, especially seniors and individuals with disabilities, in safely crossing streets in high-traffic areas near key destinations. The project aligns with the town’s Leland 2045 and Age-Friendly Community Strategic Plan, both of which emphasize inclusive infrastructure. Mayor Brenda Bozeman highlighted the initiative as a step toward a safer and more inclusive community. Leland is one of just 60 recipients nationwide to receive this specific grant.
